The front image of the wall

Chanmin Jeong suspects the illusion of flatness in the photo media and considers the scalability of the contemporary photo media. The artist notes that the space between the camera and the object and the space between the finished picture and the audience facing it were both removed from the flat result of photograph. To recall these spaces and reveal the limitations of flatness, she extends the frame to form space that leads audience movement and intentionally displays the back of a flat photograph. In 「 The front image of the wall 」(2017) compresses a layer at a time that varies as much as the space that was moved when the target was being filmed and reveals the space that disappeared from the plane in multiple dimensions. The artist continues to attempt to reconsider the essential meaning and role of the photo medium, demonstrating a selective and fragmented image and repeating the process of destroying it.

The volume of other side

The <The volume of other side> was produced in the previous working method which is used pictures as the material, making sculptural or architectural space in another dimension of photography. This work based on the interpretation and inquiry of the thesis on the physical properties of photography which was produced after various attempts such as ‘expression of texture in photos’, ‘composition of figurative scenes’, and ‘reproduction image of figurative elements of reality by camera’. This work interprets the physical properties of photography in two aspects and visualizes them. The first aspect is the property that a physical support is needed and the physical world must be the basis in the process of accepting photographs. The second aspect of physical properties is the property that must be physically reproduced by the machine. For this physical reproduction process, the writer interprets not only the process in which the machine operates, but also the space and time of the photographer's work. In conclusion, this series reminds us of the realistic situation in which photographs with material properties are placed on and make us look at the need for a physical world in which images are also interpreted. This is an attempt to indicate that photography is not just a single section of an object, but a structured scene through an instructive and physical processes.
